Fitness For Everyone
Matt Cannon
Owner/Head Coach
Is fitness really for everyone? To answer this we have to define what fitness is and CrossFit believes they have done just that. Let's dive deeper.
According to CrossFit, fitness is defined as increased work capacity across broad time and modal domains. This means that being fit requires the ability to perform well in a variety of physical activities and challenges, both short and long in duration, using a range of different movements and skills. It emphasizes the importance of achieving balance in areas such as cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. In short, CrossFit envisions fitness as a holistic approach to health and wellness that prepares individuals for any physical task or challenge that may come their way.
CrossFit is what introduced me to the sport of Olympic Weightlifting well over eight years ago and I was just coming off a torn ACL reconstruction surgery. CrossFit not only helped me get back in shape but it also made my knee stronger than I could have ever imagined. So if you think this blog post is about me hating on CrossFit you can unclinch your fists now and breathe easy. Coaching CrossFit and functional fitness for over eight years now have shown me that anyone can start their fitness journey at any moment in time. I do believe that CrossFit could address a lot of issues that I have seen BUT that's for another post. This post is not about CrossFit but I just wanted to talk about it because it's what got ME into seriously taking care of myself. It may not be for you and that's fine because CrossFit doesn't own fitness. We have to each individually own it. Enough about CrossFit for now.
Overall Health and Fitness
Maintaining good health and fitness is essential for people of all ages. Regular exercise and a healthy diet can prevent a range of health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Additionally, exercise helps improve mood, reduce stress, and boost self-confidence. For older adults, staying active can help prevent falls and maintain independence. For children and teenagers, exercise and healthy eating habits can establish lifelong patterns that support overall health and well-being. Overall, prioritizing health and fitness can lead to improved physical and mental health, a better quality of life, and a longer lifespan.
Strength Training and Cardiovascular Exercise
A lot of people are very hesitant when someone mentions those two words. Strength training isn’t dangerous. Strength training needs to approached with care, but with a good coach and program, the benefits can literally change your life for the better. Strength training and lifting weights offer numerous benefits for people of all ages. They can help increase muscle mass, improve bone density, enhance cardiovascular health, boost metabolism, and decrease the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. Additionally, strength training can improve overall physical performance, increase energy levels, and improve mental health and well-being. It's never too late to start strength training, and even small improvements in muscle strength can lead to significant health benefits.
Most people are not hesitant when it comes to conditioning. Many people think of running, biking, swimming and many other activities of this nature when they want to get into some sort of conditioning. But there are many different purposes the term conditioning can be used for so we are going to call this next part.... CARDIO. Many strength athletes don't like to hear the word cardio but can’t run away (see what I did there?) from it's inescapable clutch.
Cardiovascular exercise provides numerous benefits for individuals of all ages. Engaging in regular cardio can improve heart health, increase lung capacity, boost endurance and stamina, and promote weight loss. It can also reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain types of cancer. Additionally, cardio can enhance mood and mental well-being by decreasing stress and anxiety while increasing self-esteem and confidence.
Proper Nutrition
This is the hardest part when it comes to maximizing your results in the gym. Take it from someone who has struggled with staying consistent with his nutrition. I can be the best at finding excuses to not eat healthy. Blaming my bad nutrition on my job, family, and busy schedule are my go to excuses when it comes to this area of fitness. Finding a good groove with your nutrition can take baby steps and plenty of failure. Just be patient with yourself and allow yourself to gradually grow in this area.
Proper nutrition plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet that includes a variety of foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can provide essential nutrients needed for optimal physical and mental health. Eating a nutritious diet can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. It can also improve energy levels, boost immunity, promote healthy digestion, and support healthy weight management. Additionally, proper nutrition can enhance cognitive function, mood, and overall well-being.
Sleep and Recovery
No pain no gain! Right? Well I'm here to tell you from personal experience why that phrase is dangerous. It's important to understand that it's perfectly fine to feel uncomfortable when you are working out or training for a sport. That's not the pain I’m speaking of. I want to bring sleep and recovery to the forefront of your training plan because it may be the most important variable to this equation that is fitness.
Getting enough sleep and allowing your body to recover properly after workouts can greatly enhance your training. During sleep, your body repairs and rebuilds muscles, making them stronger for your next training session. Lack of sleep can lead to increased fatigue, decreased performance, and increased risk of injury. Recovery also allows your muscles and joints to rest and reduce inflammation, helping to prevent overuse injuries. By prioritizing sleep and recovery, you can improve your overall fitness and reach your training goals more effectively.
